I heard what Erik ten Hag said right before Twente goal as Man United plan backfires

Manchester United were made to pay for their mistakes against FC Twente on Wednesday night as Sam Lammers capitalised on an individual error by Christian Eriksen.

The Denmark international had put United ahead in their opening Europa League fixture of the 2024/25 season with a brilliant goal in the first-half.

However, in the 68th minute, Eriksen's error in his own half led to Lammers' leveller. After a powerful challenge by Manuel Ugarte, Eriksen's attempted turn resulted in the Eredivisie team equalising.

Ironically, moments before the goal for the visitors, ex-United midfielder Owen Hargreaves revealed what Erik ten Hag had said to Alejandro Garnacho when he came on. The Englishman was speaking while sat behind the United dug-out at Old Trafford and was able to provide an insight of what he heard.

The winger replaced Amad Diallo in the 67th minute and less than a minute later, Lammers scored. On TNT Sport, Hargreaves provided a sneak peek at what the United boss instructed Garnacho to do when he came on the pitch.

He said: "We're a bit too close to the bench and I think, obviously Garnacho wants to come on and attack. But actually, Ten Hag said to him, 'Defend, defend, defend'. And that's what he demands of these players, they're 1-0 up but still. They want to create the attacking plays but they have to defend in big moments too."

The game plan for the Argentina international would have swiftly changed after the equaliser and Garnacho was one of the players showing attacking intent in the closing stages.

Unfortunately, United were unable to find a winner
