Like many fans making the journey to Porto, the weather ensured United were stuck on the Manchester tarmac for nearly two hours. Players and staff were strapped in on the Boeing 757 for five hours.

There was a fleeting suggestion United would eschew a press conference entirely. A senior Uefa source was unimpressed by that prospect. By the time Ten Hag took his seat at 21.06, it was more than two hours later than intended. Diogo Dalot, scheduled to flank him, was absent as his pre-match preparation was prioritised.

The United press officer apologised for the belated arrival time and thanked the assembled journalists for their patience.
