Why Harry Amass is not playing for Man United amid left-back dilemma as Erik ten Hag plan clear

Youngster Harry Amass' wait for his Manchester United debut is ongoing after he was left out of the matchday squad for Saturday's Premier League clash with Brentford at Old Trafford.

United have struggled with injuries in the left-back department throughout 2024, so much so that Erik ten Hag has been unable to name a recognised left-back in his starting line-up at any point so far this season.

Diogo Dalot, who has operated as a makeshift left-back for almost all of this season so far, and Noussair Mazraoui are currently the only senior full-back options available to the United manager.

Amid Luke Shaw's and Tyrell Malacia's ongoing absences, an increasing number of United supporters have been urging Ten Hag to bring Amass in. The former Watford youngster went on United's pre-season tour of the United States in the summer and produced three very accomplished performances.

However, despite catching the eye, Amass is still waiting to make it into a United matchday squad this season. But as Ten Hag warned during the club's pre-season campaign, the youngster was still a few months away from being considered ready to feature for the first team.

"He is not that far along now [as Kobbie Mainoo was] at this moment, but if we train him well, if we coach him well, then in three months it's possible that he can be at that point," said Ten Hag, speaking at the start of August. "But in this moment he needs to catch up and he has to develop some of the skills needed to play for Manchester United, when we are competing for the highest position in the league.
