Hull FC boosted by returning stars as Challenge Cup semi-final spot could set tone for key month

Hull FC will hope to secure a spot in the Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday when they travel to Huddersfield Giants (kick off 5pm).

Here’s a look at some of the pre-match talking points.

Brett Hodgson can count the amount of games he has approached as head coach with a full strength side on the fingers of one hand, with a few left to spare. Injuries have been a persistent theme during his time at the club, with key men being ruled out on a regular basis.

He still has a few issues with Scott Taylor, Jamie Shaul, Joe Cator and Cam Scott all still carrying injuries and perhaps a couple of those would be included this weekend had they have been fit. But, with Carlos Tuimavave and Josh Reynolds set to return to action, Hodgson has the rare opportunity to field a starting line-up made up of his top 13 squad numbers.

Tuimavave has only featured in one game so far and his influence and input has been missed, while Reynolds will be desperate to link up with Luke Gale once more having started just two games as a half-back pairing this year. The pack is firing on all cylinders and the return of Kane Evans only complements that, given the size and strength throughout the front row.

The numbers at Hodgson’s disposal means he will have to upset a few players this week and while the likes of Jordan Johnstone, Mitieli Vulikijapani, Josh Bowden and Connor Wynne have played key roles over the last few weeks, they could all be set to miss out this time around. Of course, Hull were marginally edged out in their last performance against Wigan Warriors, but as the head coach welcomes his players onto the team bus on Saturday afternoon, he will be filled with confidence.
