Huddersfield Town 2-0 Derby County: What happened? Who stood out? What are the fans saying?

Huddersfield Town had to be patient but they eventually ran out as 2-0 winners at home to Derby County last night. 

The Terriers’ task was made much easier in the third minute when Richard Stearman saw a red card for a challenge on Lewis O’Brien.

It is a victory that leaves Carlos Corberan’s side in fifth place, with the Yorkshire club rising above West Brom, who parted company with Valerien Ismael yesterday.

For the Rams, they will take lots of positives from the residence they displayed, but ultimately, they came away with no points and remain seven points from safety.

What happened?

Taking 14 points from their last seven, Derby were coming into last night’s clash hopeful of securing at least a point.

However, Stearman’s late lunge in the third minute turned the game on its head.

Derby defended valiantly from that point onwards, whilst showing glimpses of promise when going forward.

However, Duane Holmes’ deflected effort broke parity in the 75th minute, before Jordan Rhodes sealed the three points just four minutes later after following up Danny Ward’s saved effort.

Who stood out? 

Like much of this season, O’Brien and Ward immediately stood out for the hosts, with the former a constant source of creativity and energy.

Ward was once again difficult to tame, with his intelligent runs and physicality causing the Derby defence a number of problems.

Carel Eiting and Rhodes impressed from the bench, with the latter sealing the victory with his composed effort in the 79th minute.

The Rams defended very well as a unit for the vast majority of the game and it was veteran defender Curtis Davies who particularly stood out.
