How Manchester United's disastrous 2013 transfer window under David Moyes unfolded
Manchester United's transfer window 11 years ago marked the start of a difficult period for the club.
Despite big promises and optimism, the only new player was Marouane Fellaini, which led to the reigning champions becoming a laughing stock. Sir Alex Ferguson had left, but his chosen successor was in place and fans were ready to support him.
The team needed new signings to refresh the squad that Sir Alex had led to a 20th league title. Big names like Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara, Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo and others were linked with the club.
Ed Woodward, the new man in charge of transfers, said 'there was no cut-off price' in United's pursuit of top players. Quiet optimism amongst supporters was rife, but ultimately misplaced.

New boss David Moyes was full of confidence. He didn't say no when asked if Ronaldo might come back to Old Trafford in his first meeting with the press. Moyes didn't mention Ronaldo by name but did say: "This club is always interested in the best players."
Ronaldo stayed in Madrid, but the team didn't try to calm down the fans' hopes. The team made it clear that Wayne Rooney was staying, and big names could join him.
While in Australia for a pre-season tour, Moyes talked about wanting Barcelona's Fabregas. "I'm in contact with the executive vice chairman who has been dealing with it just now," he said in Sydney. "I'll hopefully know a little more in the next day or so."
Ed Woodward had gone back to England to do important transfer work, which people thought meant making sure Rooney stayed and getting the
