Manchester United eye ‘dream’ transfer as Raphael Varane future in doubt

Manchester United are reportedly part of a three-way battle to sign Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

The 24-year-old has been a standout performer for the French club this season and a key part of their surprise Ligue 1 title push. The France international, who was signed from Barcelona in 2021, is said to be one of the 'most coveted ‘ defenders in European football as the January transfer window begins, with United claimed to be among his possible suitors.

That is according to French outlet Foot Mercato, who state that Tottenham Hotspur have already made a ‘concrete approach’ for the centre-back. Nice are expected to stand firm over offers for Todibo this month, with a view to possibly cashing in the summer window.

However, the report explains that both United and Chelsea also ‘dream’ of bringing Todibo to the Premier League in order strengthen their defences. Erik ten Hag’s team have been blighted by injury problems at centre-half, demonstrated by the veteran Jonny Evans making 12 league appearances.

The ties between new United stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS-owned Nice has led Foot Mercato to suggest that a transfer would be ‘logical’. However, Nice are expected to keep hold of their prize defender.

United’s apparent desire for a new centre-half could well be tied to Raphael Varane’s future at Old Trafford. MEN Sport has reported that Varane feels he is being pushed out of the club after United decided against extending his contract by a year.
