How league-best home form can strengthen Sheffield Wednesday's promotion credentials

Sheffield Wednesday continued their fine home record in League One as they came from behind to beat Cheltenham Town 4-1 on Saturday. Darren Moore’s side found themselves a goal down within just four minutes but soon pulled level through a brilliant acrobatic finish from Massimo Luongo.

A trio of second-half goals from Lee Gregory, Jack Hunt and George Byers completed an excellent comeback for the Owls who moved back into the play-off places. It is a part of the table that Moore will be desperate for his side to stay in between now and the end of the season as they look for an immediate return to the Championship.

He will know better than anyone that, if Wednesday are to secure promotion, they will have to take advantage of their fantastic home form as they have picked up more points at home than anyone else in League One. Only Oxford have scored more goals at their own stadium than the 41 the Owls have managed in their 20 games at Hillsborough.

Analysing Sheffield Wednesday's promotion run-in and how they compare to League One rivals

With automatic promotion looking too much of a stretch in the final seven games of the season, a place in the play-offs will almost definitely be Wednesday’s best route back into the second tier. Another strong home performance in a potential play-off semi final will be imperative if they are to secure safe passage to the Wembley final.

Although, if Wednesday want to hold onto a place in the top six, they must improve their away record with four of the final seven games of the season being played away from Hillsborough. Eight teams in League One have won more points away from home than Moore’s side this season.
