How do Sheffield United’s attendances this season compare to Sheffield Wednesday?

It is one of football’s oldest and fiercest derbies, known as the Steel City derby, named after Sheffield’s history as a steel-industry town.

The two sides have met 131 times over the years, with the latest clash coming in 2019, which ended 0-0 at Bramall Lane.

However, the two are not in the same division this campaign with United currently fighting for a play-off place in the Championship, with Wednesday competing at the top of the League One table.

But that won’t stop the two sets of supporters from keeping a close eye on the fortunes of the other.

One such way that the two can directly still compete with each other is by seeing who can fill their stadiums to a higher capacity.

Because the two are such big clubs in a relatively smaller part of the United Kingdom, it is most likely that every local person in the area will have a strong lineage of support for one side over the other.

In terms of pure capacity, Bramall Lane can hold roughly 32,000 people at a time, but Hillsborough can hold as much as 34,000 supporters.

That should give the edge to Wednesday due to their slightly bigger size.

Bramall Lane has in fact earned the highest average attendance across the Championship throughout this campaign.

The Blades have been bringing in an average of 27,500 people per home game as Paul Heckingbottom’s side attempt to bounce back straight into the Premier League having been relegated in 2021.

While Wednesday attempt to do the same having been demoted from the Championship last year, the Owls have been bringing 21,900 supporters into Hillsborough on average every home game.
