'It's opened his eyes' - Sheffield United stance over Filip Uremovic future and possible move

Sheffield United are keeping a close eye on the political landscape in Russia and the future of Filip Uremovic. FIFA announced in March that it was creating a temporary transfer window for all foreign players stranded in the country following the invasion of Ukraine.

They allowed players to suspend their contracts until the end of the season, effectively making them temporary free agents. United pounced to bring the Rubin Kazan captain to Bramall Lane in the midst of a defensive injury crisis.

Players’ union Fifpro have said the suspension was not enough and are calling on FIFA to allow players to terminate their deals. His contract with the Russian outfit expires in 2024 and the terms of his 'terrific' contract means he is out of United's price range under normal circumstances.

However, should a further extension be granted by FIFA, or indeed a termination, Paul Heckingbottom would certainly entertain the idea of bringing him back to Sheffield United. He believes the player has enjoyed his time in English football and it has 'maybe opened his eyes'.

No decision has been made either way on what is next until the situation with FIFA becomes clearer.

"There's so many things involved in that," Heckingbottom told Yorkshire Live. "No decisions have been made either way.

"When me and Filip first spoke it was to the end of the season and we were both happy with that. I know Filip has enjoyed his time here and it has maybe opened his eyes to England, to Sheffield and the possibility of working elsewhere.

"But that's going to be a real personal decision for Filip if it gets to that. He's captain of Rubin Kazan on a terrific contract. If he is allowed to suspend it further or potentially cancel it, it's going to be huge decision
