Afghanistan book place in last eight as New Zealand knocked out

Afghanistan clinched their place in the next stage of T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in Trinidad.

A third-straight victory for Afghanistan ended New Zealand's chances of advancing after losing their opening two matches.

Tournament debutants Papua New Guinea’s innings was thrown into disarray as they lost four wickets in nine balls, captain Assad Vala suffering a run out after failing to ground his bat.

He was one of four run outs as their innings subsided to 95 all out, thanks mainly to late defiance from Kiplin Doriga who hit 27.

Fazalhaq Farooqi continued his fine tournament with three for 16.

In-form openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran fell cheaply for once, but Gulbadin Naid steadied the innings.

He hit 49 off 36 balls, clinching victory with the second of his two sixes as they reached 101 for three with 29 balls to spare.

Afghanistan face co-hosts West Indies on Monday night to decide top spot in the group. Papua New Guinea end their tournament against New Zealand on the same night.
