Horse named 'Penalty to Rangers' finishes second in Canadian race as surprise SPFL wink catches fans off-guard

Fans have been left scratching their heads after a horse called 'Penalty To Rangers' finished second in a race…in CANADA.

The three-year-old bay filly ran at Hastings Racecourse, a facility at Hastings Park, four miles from downtown Vancouver. Originally called East Park, it opened for business in 1889, making it Vancouver's longest continuously used professional sports facility. But owners John and Katherine Anderson caught Scottish football fans off-guard by monikering their horse with the phrase that rivals of Rangers often cheekily throw at the Light Blues...naming one horse 'Penalty to Rangers.'

It comes after Ibrox star Todd Cantwell was criticised for what former top referee Des Roache branded a dive in a friendly with Olympiacos, with Michael Beale's side awarded a spot-kick that was converted by James Tavernier. The Light Blues received ten penalties in the Premiership last season, joint-top with Hearts.

The horse could only manage second in late-night racing at Hastings, and has only been on the field for around a year. Penalty to Rangers won a maiden race in June, beating Texas Legacy and landing delighted owners over £5800. Ridden by jockey Antonio Reyes, the young filly will no doubt be a favourite at the bookies in the Scottish markets after the revelation.

Rangers are ready for glory as they take aim at Scottish football’s biggest prizes.

Michael Beale and his new-look Light Blues have their heart set on winning back the title and a shot at glory in the Champions League. Beale’s boys will be rubbing shoulders with the best in Europe and chasing the dream in Scotland as they try to win domestic honours. And the Daily Record have produced a stunning new souvenir guide to Rangers.
