Horror as girl, 8, left with brain injury and 15 broken bones in 'freak' zorbing accident

A schoolgirl suffered a brain injury and 15 broken bones after being knocked over by a zorbing ball while on holiday.

Lily-Mae West, eight, was visiting a caravan park with her family when a zorb ball knocked her face-first onto a concrete floor. As a result of the accident, she sustained a brain injury and broke 15 bones in her skull.

The injuries affected her eye sockets, eyebrows, and the roof of her mouth. Lily-Mae's mum Katie, 32, said the 'freak accident' just 'didn't seem real'. She added: "It happened so fast and was a freak accident. When she was in hospital I was terrified.

"It didn’t seem real. It felt like I was watching what was happening from a distance. I remember when they put her to sleep, she’d occasionally wake up, frightened and scared, and would grab the tubes.

"She had tears running down her face. It was awful. As a parent you never imagine anything like this happening."

Initially, Lily-Mae was treated at Scarborough Hospital, however was soon taken to Leeds General Infirmary. She remained in the hospital for a week, where thankfully doctors discovered that the schoolgirl's brain injury was not severe.

Despite this, Katie has noticed her daughter 'isn't as confident as she used to be' and says her 'behaviours have changed'. The special needs teacher said: "She stayed in hospital for a week.

"Badly bruised, with ‘Panda eyes’, and some fluid had leaked from the brain. Her brain injury isn’t severe, but we’ve noticed her behaviours have changed.
