Hibs boss to make Kanayo Megwa decision as he hails Airdrie loan spell

Hibs boss Nick Montgomery says he'll make a decision on whether defender Kanayo Megwa will resume his loan at Championship side Airdrie, or train with the first-team after they return from their Dubai winter training camp tomorrow.

Megwa, 19, is currently in the United Arab Emirates with the first-team on a Premiership winter break training camp that would have meant the Nigerian missed the clash against Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park on Saturday, had it not been postponed.

Megwa played 14 games for the Diamonds in the second tier and has been hugely impressive. Whether he would be allowed to play against St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup fourth round clash at New Broomfield on Saturday would be debatable, should he return to Rhys McCabe's side.

Montgomery says the Nigerian could alleviate a tight budget, and has been impressed with him at right-back.

He told the Hibs Observer : "It's under discussion. How do you create more of a budget? One way is moving players out on loan.

"In Kanayo's case, he is a young player and it's not about the value of his contract, but what he can give us, moving forward.

"The whole point of a loan spell is developing players. Hopefully they progress and they get the experience, then they find confidence they can compete against men and handle the physicality.

"He seems to have come out of his shell a little since he came back to the club. He is quiet, but has real good attributes.

"He has a lot to learn tactically and technically, but the best way to do that is if he trains with the first team.

"If I feel he can help the squad then I will discuss it with Brian [McDermott, director of football] and the football staff when I get back.
