Harry Maguire exit could facilitate Rio Ferdinand's 'dream' Manchester United transfer

Manchester United could shake up their centre-back options if a buyer comes forward for Harry Maguire.

MEN Sport has reported the captain is valued at £50million despite being 30 and a fifth-choice centre-back at United. Erik ten Hag likes a right foot and left foot in defence, putting Maguire behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw.

However, United are not actively looking to sell Maguire unless they can replace him. That position could change if the takeover goes through and Ten Hag's budget increases.

If United were to cash in on Maguire, they would surely trade him in for a younger model. Looking at the age profile of their defenders, Lisandro Martinez is the youngest at 25.

Their rivals have the likes of William Saliba, Ibrahim Konate, Levi Colwill and soon-to-be-arriving Josko Gvardiol, who all have their best years ahead of them. Whilst Martinez has not peaked, United could also do with a young centre-back to mould and develop.

Former United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has urged the club to sign Colwill, should they need a defender. The England Under-21 winner starred for Brighton & Hove Albion last season and his future is up in the air.

"If I could get him, my dream one would be [Levi] Colwill," he told FIVE last month. "But I think Chelsea are going to keep him. I think they’ve seen how good he is now.”
