Luke Shaw delivers verdict on Andre Onana following Manchester United transfer

Left-back Luke Shaw believes Andre Onana will keep Manchester United's defenders "on their toes" this season following his recent arrival from Inter Milan.

United, who are closing in on the signing of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, swooped for Onana after David de Gea's exit. The 27-year-old was immediately identified as manager Erik ten Hag's primary target to replace the Spaniard, having worked with him at Ajax.

Though De Gea racked up a very impressive 25 clean sheets in all competitions last season, mistakes crept into his game far too often towards the end of the campaign. The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper failed to master the art of being a goalkeeper that was comfortable in possession, resulting in United having doubts about keeping him.

Onana, however, is widely regarded as one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in the world, meaning he has brought a very different collection of characteristics to M16. He is only too happy to get on the ball and pick a pass from his own penalty area, either by going long or short.

Though it is likely to take United time to adapt to his risk and reward style, Shaw has welcomed the Cameroonian's addition to the squad, insisting that he is aligned with Ten Hag's philosophy.

"I think, definitely, he will keep us on our toes, but we expect it," Shaw told MUTV, reflecting on Onana's arrival. "I had seen a lot of him before he came here and I had seen the quality that he has.

"I think he's only going to add strength to kind of how the manager wants to play.
