A Harley Street expert has debunked some of the most prevalent skincare myths circulating on social media, labelling them "not factual".

Countless individuals scour platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and others for beauty guidance, product reviews and tips from peers, influencers, enthusiasts, and even experts willing to offer their expertise online.

However, it's important to remember skincare is often about personal experimentation, what is effective for one might not be for another, and not every tip encountered on the internet stands up to scrutiny.

Sophie Cooper, managing director at Harley Street Skin Clinic, has provided clarity in an effort to dismantle some widespread misconceptions. She commented: "In a world overflowing with skincare advice and trends, it's easy to come across false information. Understanding the facts behind common myths can empower you to make informed choices for healthier skin."

Topping Cooper's list of myths to bust is the belief that “drinking water keeps your skin hydrated”. She clarified: "While staying hydrated is essential for overall health, drinking excessive amounts of water doesn't guarantee hydrated skin."

Cooper continued, explaining skin hydration results from a variety of factors, including diet and the use of skincare products. “More specifically, topical moisturisers play an important role in providing hydration to your skin's outer layer," she added.

The skincare expert was eager to debunk the myth that "not washing your face causes acne". She acknowledged there's "some truth to it," but clarified it's "not entirely factual".
