Hamilton Accies star urges his side to dig in and win games

Ryan Fulton says Hamilton Accies must learn to dig in and see games out when they’re ahead, after Ayr fought back to earn a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

The former Liverpool keeper pointed out that his side have been ahead in all three of their Championship games so far, but have taken only a point from each.

Andy Winter cancelled out Dipo Akinyemi’s early opener and Dan O’Reilly gave Accies the lead with a 73rd-minute header, only for Andy Murdoch to net a screamer to level with five minutes left.

Fulton reckons something has to change and said: “Everyone’s gutted in the dressing room, it’s disappointing.

“That’s three times we’ve been in the lead in the league and we need to change that and hold out now.

“I think we felt comfortable, I don’t think Ayr cut us open at all, but he hits a good strike and that’s it.

“It’s a good goal, but we’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net at the other end, and we had a couple of chances that flashed across goal.

“We’ve got to get more bodies in the box to get on the end of that, and we’ve got to cut late goals out.”

Fulton added: “I personally think we should definitely have come away with the three points, and even last week at Partick Thistle, as well.

“But we need to change that around.

“It definitely feels like points dropped.

“We fancy ourselves coming here. We know they’re a tough team, but especially when we got ourselves in front, the thing we need to do now in this league, away from home, is to hold on, dig deep, and see it out.”

Fulton was Hamilton’s hero as he saved a 41st-minute penalty from Akinyemi after Michael Doyle was judged to have fouled Daire O’Connor.
