Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth to make a decision on striker Josh Andrews’ fitness ahead of Port Vale trip

Gillingham’s big striker Josh Andrews is being considered for selection at Port Vale this weekend.

Injury issues have blighted the former Birmingham City striker’s progress with the Gills, but he’s fit again following lengthy treatment, and his availability could be well-timed.

The Gills have doubts over injured pair Elliott Nevitt (foot) and Oli Hawkins (hand), while Joe Gbode is suspended for the trip to Vale Park this Saturday.

Andrews, 23, hasn’t featured for the Gills since January 2, when he played against Bromley at Priestfield. Injury has limited him to just 14 appearances this season, with his one goal coming in an EFL Trophy match at Stevenage.

He joined the Gills in January 2024 but arrived with an injury, and only came into the side towards the latter end of the 23/24 season, netting in a 3-0 win over Barrow.

An appearance against Port Vale will be a big boost for the striker, as he targets a much better 25/26 season, but manager Gareth Ainsworth is remaining cautious.

Ainsworth, speaking after training on Thursday, said: “We're looking a little bit slim on the forward side of things. We'll have to have a look at that.

“Jimmy-Jay Morgan's obviously on loan from Chelsea, but he's probably the only recognised forward who's fit at the moment.

“Josh Andrews is making a comeback. We'll have to see if he's ready. We'll definitely have to shuffle the side from last week.

“Josh (has been) training (and we’ve had) big discussions with the sports science and medical teams to see whether he is (available).

"If he's available to start or play some part, without a risk, then I'll definitely involve him because I think that would be a nice end (to the season) for Josh.
