Striker Jacob Wakeling transfer listed by Peterborough United after season-long loan at Gillingham –Chelsea’s Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Liverpool’s Dom Corness and Crystal Palace forward Asher Agbinone return to parent clubs

Striker Jacob Wakeling has been put on the transfer list by his parent club following a season on loan with Gillingham.

The 23-year-old joined the Gills last summer from Peterborough United but was limited to just five starts in the league.

Wakeling - like the Gills - began the season in promising fashion. He started the opening game against Carlisle United and scored the second goal in a 4-1 win at Priestfield.

That goal followed one on hisfirst Gillingham appearance, in the club’s final pre-season match of the summer, at Woking.

Sadly, that goal against Carlisle was his only one during his season with the club.

In addition to his five league starts, he made 11 appearances in League 2 off the bench, and an additional three matches in cup games.

In his spell with the Gills, he had a three-month period where he wasn’t included in a matchday squad, but remained at the club during the transfer window, making four appearances off the bench between John Coleman leaving and Gareth Ainsworth taking charge of the side.

Wakeling is one of several forwards heading back to their parent clubs. Asher Agbinone’s injury-hit time ended with a start at Port Vale on the last day and he heads back to Crystal Palace.

Chelsea forward Jimmy-Jay Morgan, 19, showed promise and managed a couple of goals in his 16 appearances for the club.

Midfielder Dom Corness heads back to Liverpool after seeing little action while defender Andy Smith - arguably the best of the loan recruits - returns to Hull City after sitting out
