Gillingham forward Joe Gbode joins Luton Town for an undisclosed fee

Gillingham have sold homegrown forward Joe Gbode to League 1 Luton Town.

The 20-year-old has left Priestfield for an undisclosed fee with Luton finally getting their man after previous attempts to sign him this summer failed.

Gbode started the first two league games of the season for Gillingham. He came on as a substitute at Tranmere to score a last-gasp equaliser and also came off the bench in Saturday’s win at Oldham.

He leaves Priestfield after scoring four goals in 58 games, having made his Gills debut in a FA Cup tie at Cheltenham in 2021.

On signing for Luton, Gbode said: “I’m delighted to be here, it’s a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started.

“The facilities are unbelievable and it’s a well-run club with a good manager, and there are a lot of top strikers I can learn from.

“I’m quite quick, I like to dribble – and score, of course. My stats might not say that but I think I can thrive in this environment.

“Kenilworth Road is an unbelievable place; the stands are close to the pitch and that gives you that extra boost playing at home.

“It’s a big family here and I’m delighted to be here.”

Luton manager Matt Bloomfield said: “Joe’s a young man who we have kept tabs on since the end of last season and who we played against this pre-season.

“I know the managerial team at Gillingham very well and they have had nothing but good things to say about Joe’s talent and how high his ceiling is.

“He’s one for the future but we’re looking forward to having him in and around the group.”
