Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has been nominated for the Sky Bet League 2 manager-of-the-month award along with Chesterfield’s Paul Cook, Walsall’s Mat Sadler and Bromley boss Andy Woodman

Gillingham’s unbeaten start to the season has seen boss Gareth Ainsworth nominated for the Sky Bet EFL League 2 manager-of-the-month award for August.

The Gills have made a flying start to the season under Ainsworth - continuing the good form that they were in at the back end of last season after the 52-year-old took charge.

Ainsworth’s side picked up four wins and two draws in their opening six league games of the season during a hectic first month.

The Gills started with a long trip to Accrington and returned with a point after Armani Little equalised in a 1-1 draw.

Bradley Dack scored the winner against Walsall, Joe Gbode netted in stoppage-time to draw 1-1 at Tranmere, there was a 4-1 home win over Chesterfield and back-to-back 1-0 successes, at home to Crewe and away at Oldham Athletic.

Chesterfield’s boss Paul Cook is in the running too, despite the heavy loss at Priestfield, as is Walsall manager Mat Sadler. They were also turned over by the Gills. Bromley’s Andy Woodman is the other nomination.

Gillingham and Bromley shared a 2-2 draw at the weekend and are the only two teams that remain undefeated.

On receiving the nomination, Ainsworth is said to have “instilled unity, a collective focus and a determination to go to the final whistle as Gillingham moved top of League 2 with 14 points from six unbeaten games.”

Last season, former boss Mark Bonner scooped the August manager-of-the-month award after he too started the season unbeaten. He was also nominated for the September award before falling away dramatically in October and getting sacked by the end of the year.

The Sky Bet manager-of-the-month judging panel comprises former Barnsley manager Danny Wilson, Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman and Sky Bet EFL
