The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone have arrived in Lagos to compete at the West African Scrabble Championship, which begins today at Novotel Hotel, Lekki.

Chairman of the Accommodation and Venue Sub-Committee of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Bright Idahosa, explained that Novotel Hotel was chosen because of its serene and luxurious setting and its first class services.

“We want our players and our visitors from the West Coast to feel at home and enjoy the very best of Nigerian hospitality while here. The hall for the competition is spacious and tournament friendly,” Idahosa said.

Members of Team Nigeria, who were camped at Wood Peckers Garden, Yaba, moved into the championship hotel yesterday.

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) picked a 21-man team for the championship, with defending champion, Eta Karo, in the list.

The championship has a $12,000 prize money for the top 10 individuals and top three teams at the event.

According to its technical director, John, who is also chairman of the technical and tournament logistics sub-committee, said the championship is a 28-game competition of one random, 22 lagged and five kings of the hill pairings.
