Iran beat Gambia as federation seeks FIFA clarity over visas

ANTALYA: Iran have ‌asked FIFA to clarify when tournament visas will be issued following the relocation of their World Cup training camp from Arizona to Tijuana, a senior official from the Islamic Republic’s national football federation (FFIRI) said on Friday. The national team came from behind to beat Gambia 3-1 in a World Cup warm-up match in the Turkish city of Antalya, days after their tournament preparations were disrupted by a base camp relocation to Mexico following approval from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and FIFA. Iran are scheduled to play all three of their ‌group matches in ‌the United States but the team’s participation ‌in the June 11 to July 19 tournament has been in question since the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February. The relocation followed diplomatic friction and visa complications, with Iran now requiring cross-border clearance for their Group G matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Los Angeles and Seattle. Mehdi Mohammadnabi, first vice president of FFIRI, told Reuters that Iran had written to FIFA seeking a firm ‌answer after earlier applying for ‌visas. “We sent an email to FIFA today and asked them to announce the ‌result as soon as possible, to say on what day ‌the visas will be issued, because we now need both multiple-entry Mexican visas and multiple-entry US visas,” Mohammadnabi said. “Based on the latest conversation we had, they replied that the administrative process will most likely be completed ‌this week,” he added. Mohammadnabi said FIFA had proposed the Tijuana camp and Iran had accepted the arrangement. “FIFA proposed this camp, and FIFA should tell you what has happened,” he said.

Iran focused on fitness in Turkiye after war-enforced furlough

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said he ‌and his staff would have their work cut out getting their squad ready for the World Cup at their training camp in Turkiye with most of the players having been out of action for the last seven weeks. The domestic Arabian Gulf Pro League season was suspended after the United States and Israel launched air strikes on Iran in late February and will not resume until after the World Cup. Of the 30-man squad Ghalenoei named on Saturday, 22 play for Iranian clubs and have been ‌restricted to a ‌Tehran national team training camp since friendlies ‌against Costa Rica and Nigeria in Antalya in late March. “Naturally, I am not fully satisfied with the players’ level of readiness,” Ghalenoei told the Iranian FA (FFIR) magazine before the departure for Turkiye on Monday. “But with a training camp that is approximately two and a half to three weeks long, we can make up about 20 to 25 percent of this shortfall. “We need to raise our domestic-based ‌players to the level required by ‌the modern game,” he added.

Iran have ‘constructive’ meeting with FIFA over World Cup preparations

PARIS: FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom described as “excellent” and “constructive” the meeting held on Saturday in Istanbul with the Iranian federation to ensure Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Iranians are scheduled to be based and play all three of their group matches in the US in spite of the war currently being waged in the Middle East. “We’ve had an excellent meeting, a constructive meeting together with the Iran FA,” said Grafstrom. “I think we’re working closely together and looking very much forward to welcoming them to the World Cup. “We’ve had the opportunity to discuss some of the operational matters, like we do with every member association. “But I’m very happy that we were able to have this positive exchange, and both the Iran FA and FIFA are very happy with the meeting and looking forward to welcoming Team Melli in the USA, Canada and Mexico.” The president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, had said on Thursday that no visas had yet been issued for Iran’s team. But he also described Saturday’s meeting as “positive and constructive” without going into details. “We discussed our concerns and expressed our joint commitment to ensure the smooth participation of Team Melli,” he said. The meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Turkish Football Federation, comes as the Iranian team prepares to leave on Monday morning for a training camp in Turkiye before heading to the United States. Iran hope to play two friendlies in Antalya.
