Gary Neville explains why Erik ten Hag might not succeed at Manchester United

Former captain Gary Neville believes it is 'doubtful' manager Erik ten Hag will be able to win the Premier League and the Champions League under the current ownership model at Manchester United.

Appointed in April 2022, Ten Hag has overseen a steady incline of progress at Old Trafford, leading the club to its first trophy in six years and securing a top-four finish last season. This campaign, however, the Reds have been sluggish out of the traps, threatening to undo all of the hard work Ten Hag put in last term.

The Dutchman's hopes of building on last season's triumphs, however, have been impacted by a plethora of situations out of his control, such as the ongoing takeover saga and the unprecedented injury crisis United have encountered so far this term. The Reds' goal at the start of the season was to improve on last season's third-placed finish and add more silverware to their trophy cabinet.

Though the league campaign is only nine games old, United are already playing catch up, currently finding themselves five points shy of the top-four and eight points behind current leaders Tottenham Hotspur. Their hopes of making it out of their Champions League group are also currently out of their own hands.

Though Ten Hag has been realistic when setting targets and ambitions, United still strive to be the best in class, meaning that status will not be reclaimed until they have laid their hands on the Premier League title again and conquered Europe for the first time since 2008.
