Gary Lineker's perfect nine-word response to Kobbie Mainoo England announcement

England legend Gary Lineker has praised Gareth Southgate's management after he selected Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo for the senior squad for the first time.

Mainoo has been a revelation for United this season after slotting into the midfield following his injury setback in pre-season. The teenager has gained plenty of plaudits for his fearless nature and ability to collect the ball and take on opponents.

When Southgate announced his England squad last week, some United fans felt Mainoo was unlucky not to be handed a senior squad call-up. The 18-year-old showed no signs of disappointment though as he starred in the Reds' victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon - a performance which was so good even Jurgen Klopp acknowledged him after he was substituted.

On Tuesday, Southgate U-turned on his call for Mainoo to wait further for a senior call-up and chose to promote him to the squad for this week's friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. The England squad has now been expanded to 26 men with nobody dropping out at this stage due to injury.

Reflecting on the call to bring Mainoo into the set-up, Lineker wrote on Twitter: "Much deserved and a good decision by Gareth Southgate." United's academy sensation will not break any records if he makes his England debut during the international break.

Theo Walcott remains the youngest player to ever represent the Three Lions at 17 years, 2 months and 14 days. Mainoo is joined in the England set-up by his United teammates Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford.
