Former Rangers star confirms transfer to St Johnstone as attacker gets another Premiership chance

Former Rangers forward Jamie Murphy has signed a one-year deal with fellow Premiership side St Johnstone ahead of the new campaign.

The 32-year-old winger was a free agent following his release from Hibs earlier this summer came after another stint down south, this time on loan at Mansfield Town. He struggled with injury at Easter Road but displayed his quality in flashes over 50 appearances after initially arriving on loan from Rangers in 2020.

Saints hold the option of a further year if he impresses. The experienced forward told Saints TV about his latest Premiership move: “The manager (Callum Davidson) has been in touch for a few weeks now, I’ve been doing my own running since the end of last season hoping this opportunity would come about. My agent and myself have been itching at the bit to get the deal over the line and we’re very happy to have the contract signed.

“I come in with a lot of experience so hopefully that will help add to the squad. I’ve played a lot of football and scored a few goals along the way so hopefully I can keep adding to that during my time here in Perth.”

Murphy made his name at Motherwell, appearing 212 times and becoming their all-time leading goalscorer in European competition.

Successful stints in England at Sheffield United and Brighton followed before his 2018 move to Ibrox was spoiled by a gruesome knee injury, making 29 Light Blues appearances in three years.
