Former Premier League goalkeeper identifies key trait Andre Onana would give Manchester United

Former Newcastle United and Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop believes Andre Onana would add a sense of leadership between the posts if he sealed a move to Manchester United.

United, as reported over the weekend, are making progress with a deal to sign the Inter Milan goalkeeper. Football director John Murtough is understood to have held talks with the Italian club in an attempt to get a deal in place.

The Reds are on the hunt for a new first-choice goalkeeper following David de Gea's exit and manager Erik ten Hag has identified Onana as his primary target. Ten Hag worked with the Cameroonian at Ajax and is keen to be reunited with him at Old Trafford.

Onana joined Inter last summer and excelled in his first season in Italy, helping them win two trophies and reach the Champions League final. He also recorded 19 clean sheets in 41 appearances.

The 27-year-old earned a collection of plaudits for his performances throughout the season, particularly in the Champions League. He was lauded by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola both before and after the final in Istanbul last month.

And for former Premier League shot-stopper Hislop, Onana has all of the necessary credentials to pick up the baton from De Gea and become United's new No.1, highlighting his leadership capabilities as one of his strongest attributes.
