Manchester United fans deliver verdict on David de Gea's exit

David de Gea's Manchester United departure was confirmed late last week and the majority of supporters surveyed by the Manchester Evening News believe it was the right decision.

De Gea's contract with United expired at the start of the month but confirmation that talks over a new deal would continue left his future up in the air. He spent the weekend after his release in Menorca getting married.

The 32-year-old officially confirmed his exit on Friday with an emotional statement on his social media, calling time on a 12-year career with the Reds. "Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings," he wrote.

De Gea's future at United had long been the subject of speculation, with a number of high-profile errors last season adding to the consensus that he did not fit into Erik ten Hag's plans. But his campaign was also littered with some excellent performances, reminding everyone of his quality as the Spaniard also landed the Premier League's Golden Glove award.

After confirmation of his exit, the Manchester Evening News asked its readers if United will regret letting the Spanish international leave, and of the 2,068 that answered, 60.5% (1,251) said no, believing that his time with the club was up. However it was far from unanimous, with 39.5% (817) left thinking it was the wrong decision.
