Former Dundee United and Hamilton Accies striker rolls back the years to help team win first title

David Winters was at the double for East Kilbride YM 35s to help the side win the Central Premier League for the very first time.

The former Hamilton Accies, Dundee United and Ross County striker hung up his boots two years ago, but still gets his football fix with his local side.

And last Friday night, the 41-year-old bagged a brace alongside team-mate and current Caledonian Braves boss Ricky Waddell to beat Strathclyde Thistle in a dramatic 4-3 win.

YM needed a victory to be sure of the title and let a 3-0 lead slip to set up a frantic finish.

But Waddell’s 74th minute strike proved to be the winner and the team were able to party the night away at YM’s Kirktonholme Sports Bar after pipping Viewfield Rovers and Easterhouse to the trophy.

Delighted David said: “It is the first time we’ve won the top league. I think the team got close once before and couldn’t quite get over the line, so it’s great.

“We were 3-0 up in the first half and then they scored just before half-time to make it a bit nervy. Then they got another two in the second half.

There are some more familiar faces in the squad with ex-East Kilbride FC defender Martyn McLaughlin and ex-Clyde midfielder David Gray, while David’s brother Robbie – the ex-Aberdeen striker – is a former YM 35s player.

David added: “There is some good talent in there. Most of them have played with each other over the years and there’s a few I know from my school days and I’ve played with a couple of them as well.

“They are all good lads and up for a good laugh, that’s the most important
