Team Europe clinch Ryder Cup glory as Tommy Fleetwood seals it and heads nervy finale off at the pass
It was a nervier final day than it had any right to be but Team Europe are Ryder Cup champions at last.
Luke Donald's team stormed the Foursomes and Fourballs on Friday but a stronger Saturday from Team USA restored some pride. Still, Europe led by five heading into the Sunday Singles and when Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton all got early wins on the board - as well as Jon Rahm's battling half-point against Scottie Scheffler in the opener - it looked as if the writing was on the wall.
Europe needed just half a point from the final six matches but a run of US wins from Brooks Koepka, Xander Schaufele and co left plenty of red on the board and set up a tense finale. But it was Tommy Fleetwood, contesting the penultimate match with Rickie Fowler, who finally got it over the line in Rome, who guaranteed the half-point needed to secure it when he went 2 up with 2 to play on the 16th.
It meant Scot Bob MacIntyre, who was in action in the final match, wasn't required to take anything with Europe able to play out the remaining holes with the pressure off.
