Folkestone Invicta manager Jay Saunders sees his side retain their 14-point lead at the top of the Isthmian Premier after 2-0 win over Welling United
Folkestone came through another test of their Isthmian Premier title credentials as the games start to run out.
Leaders Invicta beat Welling 2-0 at Cheriton Road on Saturday to stay 14 points clear of second-placed Aveley with 13 matches remaining.
Donell Thomas broke the deadlock 10 minutes before the break and Liam Smith clinched victory midway through the second half for Jay Saunders’ side.
Welling are fighting for their lives at the other end of the table and were never going to roll and make life easy.
Folkestone were up to the task, however, to stay in control at the summit.
“There’s no easy games at this time of the season,” said manager Saunders.
“Everyone’s playing for something, whether it’s trying to stay up, like Welling are, or challenging for play-offs or to win the league.
“There’s a lot of pressure on these games, so I was pleased with the performance and the clean sheet.
“I thought it was a decent enough performance, it’s another one ticked off and there's 13 games to go.
“Welling came to make it hard for us and make it ugly, and they worked ever so hard off the ball.
“We had to be patient but once we got our goal I felt confident we would go on and win.
“I watched them the week before at Aveley (late 2-1 defeat) and I thought they were really unlucky not to come away with something.
“They’ve got players who can hurt you but I thought, all in all, we dealt with that behind the ball and in front of goal I’m always confident we can score.”
The season appears to be racing by but there’s no thoughts of entering the home straight just yet.
Folkestone, who visit Lewes this Saturday (3pm), just have to keep doing what they’re doing.
Saunders said: “We’ve got 13 games left and all we can do is keep ticking them
