Manchester United’s pre-season is already underway but it feels like the crunch preparations start this weekend.

All squad members are now back at Carrington after those who took part in last month’s internationals clocked back in on Saturday after being handed an extended break. They will be greeting a new teammate among them after Mason Mount’s £55m transfer from Chelsea.

He has already made his debut, having started Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Leeds in Oslo as the summer schedule got underway. Erik ten Hag will have been planning for the season ahead all summer but some acts and decisions have had to be put on hold until now.

The United boss is preparing his players ahead of the club’s pre-season tour of the US, but before that the club has a friendly with Lyon in Scotland to play on Wednesday. Here are five things he will have to carry out between now and the start of the season.

A number of youngsters featured in the win over Leeds, including goalscorers Joe Hugill and Noam Emeran. They will be hoping to be selected for the trip across the pond and have one final chance against Lyon to secure a spot.

The pre-season tour is a prime chance for academy hopefuls to showcase and Ten Hag has always underlined that he will only give players such chances if they deserve it. Meanwhile, he could decide to leave several unwanted first-team players behind if they are not a part of his plans…

The likes of Eric Bailly, Brandon Williams and Alex Telles are likely to be sold while a number of other big names could be axed too. United are open
