Fernando Alonso says Alpine deserve to be even higher in the F1 standings after two rounds

Alpine driver Fernando Alonso says that his team deserves to be higher than where they are in the standings and that he is pleased with the car’s performance so far after the first two races of the Formula 1 season.

The Spaniard has certainly got to grips quickly with the new Alpine A522 with a top ten finish in Bahrain and then another top ten running in Saudi Arabia before retirement denied him a decent haul of points.

That said, then, you can see why Fernando thinks that the team should perhaps be even higher in the tables than they are at the moment, but overall he is pleased with the start the French/British team has made.

“We deserve to be much higher in the standings after two races,” Alonso said. “Our car has been good and the performance has also been good over the weekends.

“Last weekend was a disappointment as we looked comfortable and set for sixth position until we had our retirement.

“It was frustrating but we can be pleased with our overall pace so far.”

Looking forward to this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, Alonso continued: “I like the track and whilst it’s quite difficult to overtake the changes have been made to encourage this, so we’ll see how it all plays out.

“Sundays is where the points are scored so we just need to make sure we score points then. The whole team is working hard to make sure we keep on top of our development.

“We had some fair and exciting racing in Saudi and also in Bahrain.”

Alonso certainly looks and sounds as motivated as ever and he will be pleased that the Alpine car is looking pretty competitive at the moment.
