Father and son Derek and Zayshaun Asamoah score the goals that send Sittingbourne into the Isthmian South East play-off places with fifth successive victory
Sittingbourne’s father-and-son duo were the heroes as they climbed into the Isthmian South East play-off places on Tuesday night.
Derek Asamoah equalised against Hassocks and son Zayshaun Asamoah scored the winner in a 2-1 home victory which sent them up to fifth place.
It was a fifth successive victory for new manager Reece Prestedge, who has overseen a rise from 12th spot in his first two weeks in charge.
New signing Zayshaun has joined dad and fellow forward Derek at Woodstock after signing from Sporting Bengal.
The pair previously played together at Haringey Borough and link up again in Sittingbourne colours.
Zayshaun, 21, had been training with the Brickies and made his debut in a 2-0 win over Ashford on Tuesday last week, joining Derek on the pitch as second-half substitutes.
Brickies boss Prestedge was in the market for a forward and, in Zayshaun, found the answer under his nose.
“He’s been coming into training,” said Prestedge, speaking before the Hassocks win.
“He’s looked really strong, really lively and really confident - he hasn’t been fazed at all.
“I was looking for an energetic young player and I thought what’s the point in looking elsewhere when I’ve got one here? I thought I might as well give him the opportunity.
“Where he was coming training with us anyway, he already knew the boys, so it was a bit of a no-brainer.”
Asamoah Sr, 44, joined Sittingbourne in September after a long and varied career at home and abroad, including hundreds of Football League games for the likes of Northampton, Lincoln and Carlisle.
Zayshaun is a different player but has the potential to be a real asset for Sittingbourne in their promotion bid.
“They’re close as father and son,” said Prestedge.
“They’re very different in the
