Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne on the threat posed by Dagenham’s former Newcastle and Liverpool striker Andy Carroll as his side look to build on Torquay victory

Manager Alan Dunne is working on a plan to keep former Premier League striker Andy Carroll quiet when Tonbridge host Dagenham this weekend.

The Daggers made headlines last summer when they signed the ex-Newcastle, Liverpool, West Ham and England striker on a free transfer following a spell in France.

At 36, Carroll could easily still be plying his trade in the Football League and, after a slow start to his Daggers career, has been bang in form.

The big targetman has six goals, including a hat-trick in a 5-0 National League South win over AFC Totton at the end of last month.

Dagenham arrive at Longmead on Saturday, having surged up the table after a difficult opening to the campaign following relegation.

The form of Carroll has been key to their resurgence.

“To have Andy Carroll and Tonbridge Angels in the same conversation is remarkable,” said Dunne.

“He’s still got it. He’s their top goalscorer, they play off him, they work off him - he’s a driving factor in that team, so he’s definitely one we’re going to have to keep quiet and watch out for because he can finish.

“It’s Andy Carroll we’re talking about here. He did it in the Premier League for many years and is still the same Andy Carroll, just a little bit older.

“We won’t have a specific person on him, because he’ll pull either side, so we’ve just got to be aware of him and keep him out the box, that’s if we can, because he is a box player, and that’s where he can do damage to you.

“But we also have to do what we’re good at and put our stamp on the game and affect the game.

“Every team we play against are going to have players that are probably bigger, better and stronger than what we’ve got in the building, there’s no doubt about that.
