"Expect a record fee" - Journalist now drops big Ibrox claim involving key Rangers star

Rangers could be set to receive a club-record transfer fee if they sell Calvin Bassey this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Bassey flourished at Ibrox last season, and he has been attracting plenty of interest from teams south of the border.

Aston Villa appear to be at the front of the queue to sign Bassey at the moment, with The Times reporting that they are closing in on landing the 6 foot 1 central defender.

However, Sky Sports have also claimed that a number of other Premier League clubs are monitoring Bassey, while Bundesliga sides are also interested in the 22-year-old.

The same report states that Rangers are holding out for at least £25m before letting him go.

The highest transfer fee that Rangers have ever received for a player is the £12.6m they got from selling Nathan Patterson to Everton in January.

Jones thinks this figure could be smashed if Rangers opt to part ways with Bassey.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Rangers have to consider that Bassey could go. It’s going to depend on what offers land, but his profile is so high at the moment that they could probably expect a record fee for him if they negotiate well.”

Bassey had a strong 2021/22 season at Rangers overall, but it was his performances in big games at the end of the campaign that particularly caught the eye.

In the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt, he delivered an exceptional defensive display, making four clearances, three interceptions, two tackles and blocking two shots, according to WhoScored.

He seemed to pop up everywhere on the pitch, and he was very unfortunate to end up on the losing side as Rangers were beaten on penalties.
