'Everyone in that dressing room knows' - Harry Maguire gives verdict on Marcus Rashford's Manchester United form

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has leapt to the defence of teammate Marcus Rashford after his underwhelming showing in Saturday night's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Recalled to the starting line-up after missing the draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday through suspension, Rashford was deployed on the right-flank, with Alejandro Garnacho taking up residency on the left. He did little to justify his recall, producing a flat and uninspiring performance.

Sixteen minutes after Anthony Gordon had fired Newcastle into a deserved lead, Rashford was substituted, making way for Antony with 61 minutes on the clock. The United academy graduate could have had no complaints about being withdrawn early after a lifeless showing.

Failing to track back and support Aaron Wan-Bissaka defensively, he did little to cover himself in glory. Supporters blasted him in social media posts as a result.

However, Maguire has issued his backing to his United and England teammate, reminding everyone of his 30-goal campaign last season.

"Marcus had an unbelievable season last season," Maguire said, as quoted by the Mirror. "This season, it hasn't clicked for him.

"He's working hard. Everyone in that dressing room knows what he's about."
