Everton: 94-cap star 'definite upgrade for Lampard' at Goodison Park

Everton signing Idrissa Gana Gueye is an upgrade on the rest of the club’s midfielders, believes journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 32-year-old rejoined the Toffees from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day, and O’Rourke is convinced that he is a good addition to Frank Lampard’s squad.

After leaving Everton for PSG back in 2019, Gueye officially made his return to Goodison Park at the end of the transfer window in a deal worth around £2m.

Upon his arrival, Lampard told Everton’s official club website: “Gana is a player for the now. The club knows him very well and he knows the club.

“In terms of his qualities as a number six or as a number eight – a role he played at PSG a lot – it gives me a great option, great experience, and a different profile of player to what we had.”

During his first spell at Goodison Park, Gueye made 108 appearances. He has now added to the total number of games he has played for the club after featuring in their recent Merseyside derby against rivals Liverpool.

O’Rourke thinks Gueye is an upgrade on the midfielders Lampard already had.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “Good signing, Idrissa Gueye. Everton didn’t really want to lose him three years ago when they sold him to Paris Saint-Germain.

“He’s been in and out of the PSG team because it’s such a star-studded team, but I think Idrissa Gueye is definitely an upgrade for that Everton midfield right now.”

Convincing Gueye to come back to Goodison Park was a smart move. He brings a lot to the table and did not cost too much money.

The 94-cap Senegal international has plenty of experience at the highest level, playing in the Premier League before and the Champions League, and is a very good ball winner.
