Erik ten Hag unveiled his new Manchester United attacking tactic vs Arsenal

Full-backs go on the attack

A feature of Erik ten Hag's tactical approach last season was his use of a full-back drifting into midfield, never quite as aggressively or regularly as Manchester City, but often Diogo Dalot, in particular, would take up station at the base of midfield.

But he looks to be moving that on this season if the set-up against Arsenal is anything to go by, especially in the first half. When United enjoyed spells of possession against the Gunners Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw would move forward and drift infield, playing as No. 8s, next to Bruno Fernandes and sometimes slotting into what was a fluid front line.

It gave United another player as part of the attacking approach, with Fernandes, Mason Mount, the front three and now a full-back gathered around the box. It was a six-man attack at times and gave United plenty of options around the Arsenal box.

It comes with a risk of course, but Ten Hag used a midfielder - Kobbie Mainoo in the first half - dropping in to form a three-man defence to guard against counterattacks.

This is a more attacking approach from Ten Hag. Rather than using a full-back to control possession, it involves using one to almost create a little more chaos near the opposition area. It will be fascinating to see how it develops during pre-season.
