Erling Haaland transfer verdict sees Alan Shearer dismiss nine-year contract at Man City
Alan Shearer is convinced Erling Haaland won't complete his nine-and-a-half-year contract at Manchester City – insisting there's "no chance" he'll remain at the club until he's 34.
The football world was left in shock last week after Haaland inked a staggering nine-and-a-half-year extension with City, which is set to keep him at the club until 2034. Despite being only 24 now and his contract set to run until he is 34, Newcastle United legend Shearer is convinced the Norwegian star will leave before his deal ends.
Currently in his third season with the reigning Premier League champions, speculation about Haaland's long-term future – particularly a switch to Real Madrid – has been ongoing since his days at Borussia Dortmund. Even faced with Haaland's substantial new deal not having an active release clause until 2029 (believed to be valued at £250m), Shearer sees a transfer away as still plausible at some stage.
On The Rest is Football podcast, alongside co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, the Premier League's all-time leading scorer – whose record Haaland is on course to challenge – voiced his views on the forward's tenure at City. "By the way, there's absolutely no chance he's staying at Man City for nine-and-a-half years," said Shearer. "Oh, seriously, do you think? I mean, do you think he will?"
Richards suggested Madrid as a potential next step but pointed out that with stars like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo, the La Liga champions might not be in dire need of Haaland, reports the Mirror.
Shearer then commented: "But nine-and-a-half years, he's going to be 34 years of age. I don't see him being there, I'm not saying that he won't break the record. I'm pretty sure he will and he'll probably do it in
