Ely riots trial to hear fresh evidence as eight appear before court - live updates

The third day of the trial of eight defendants accused of taking part in the Ely riots has started. It was previously heard that mothers of two teenage boys killed in an e-bike crash were prevented by police from going to their children soon after the collision.

The riots in the Cardiff suburb broke out on May 22, 2023, following the deaths of Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, who were killed in a crash while riding an electric bike on Snowdon Road.

Lee Robinson, 38, of Heol Deva, Caerau, Luke Williams, 31, of Deere Place, Ely, Jaydan Baston, 21, of Heol Poyston, Caerau, Michaela Gonzales, 37, of Plymouth Wood Close, Ely, McKenzie Danks, 22, of Heol Trelai, Caerau, Jordan Bratcher, 27, of Glyndwr Road, Ely, Zayne Farrugia, 25, of Heol Ebwy, Caerau, and Connor O'Sullivan, 26, of Caerau Court Road, Caerau, have pleaded not guilty to rioting. When questioning witness PC Fiona Haggerty-Jones at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday, September 24, Robinson's defence barrister, Harry Baker, asked if there was footage of the beginning of the incident, after Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans had been killed.

Mr Baker said: “(There is) Film of when the whole thing started when police wouldn’t let the mothers go to the children?”

PC Haggerty-Jones: “That is correct.”

Mr Baker: “There is footage of not letting the mothers go to their children who died?”

PC Haggerty-Jones: “Yes.”

The trial previously heard that shortly after the boys' death, there was "grief, distress and anger" as a crowd gathered in Snowden Road, where the collision occurred on May 22,
