East Kilbride v Aberdeen: Kilby boss Mick Kennedy dreaming of a shock win

East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy is dreaming of lightning striking twice against Aberdeen on Saturday but says his side will play their own game, regardless.

Kennedy very famously knocked Aberdeen out of the 2022-23 Scottish Cup with his former Darvel side, and welcomes Jimmy Thelin’s new-look Dons to K-Park in the Premier Sports Cup group stages on Saturday.

The Kilby gaffer knows they will be massive underdogs for that game, but having beat Dumbarton 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Rock on Saturday, Kennedy says the pressure is on their opponents, despite an 8-0 defeat at Championship side Airdrie on Tuesday.

He said: “It’s two cracking games this week, two different styles of play, so that will impose different challenges, and then it’s my old friends Aberdeen on Saturday!

“The first game was a remarkable achievement [at Darvel], we’ll see if we can pull it off twice.

“What we’ve done in the last few games against teams higher up, and what I did with my Darvel team, is we’ll try to stick to our own game-plan and style.

“At times we’ll probably need to carry a wee bit of luck and things like that, and we’ll see where we end up.

“Aberdeen have a new manager in Jimmy Thelin, so I’m sure he will impose different challenges to what Jim Goodwin’s team did back when I was at Darvel.

“It looks like Aberdeen went pretty strong against Queen of the South on Saturday [3-0 win], so I’m sure that will be a really challenging game.

“I think if we can impose ourselves on the games and our style in the games for large parts, that should give us confidence and belief, going into the Lowland League.
