Former Morton and Hamilton Accies striker Steven Boyd an "unbelievable signing" for East Kilbride, says boss

East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy has hailed the arrival of former Hamilton Accies and Morton striker Stephen Boyd an "unbelievable signing."

Kilby swooped to snap up the 27-year-old yesterday and his move to K-Park comes after he opted to take time out of the game in February, mutually agreeing a deal to terminate his Morton contract that lasted until July 2025.

Kennedy says Boyd's relationship with his assistant Si Ferry has helped encourage him to come back to football and he admits it is a signing they would never have been able to pull off in normal circumstances.

Kennedy explained: "Steven is an unbelievable signing for us. We've been pretty fortunate in that Steven left Morton and fell out of love with football a wee bit.

"We managed to convince him to come back into the game. In normal circumstances, we wouldn't have had an opportunity to get anywhere near him. He had multiple options before but didn't feel like he wanted to go back but he has a good relationship with Si - they played together at Peterhead - so that helped us.

"I think it is because he's been out of football since February and he wanted to come back into the right environment and enjoy it again. He is an exceptionally talented football player and, at only 27, I think he would have stayed in the SPFL otherwise."

Boyd came off the bench to make his debut in last night's 5-0 win at Broomhill. Kilby managed to bounce back from Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Cumbernauld Colts with an emphatic result in Dumbarton. A Joao Balde brace plus strikes from Calum Biggar, Sean Fagan and Tiwi Daramola did the damage.
