East Kilbride boss rues lack of killer instinct in defeat to Cumbernauld Colts

East Kilbride fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Cumbernauld Colts on Saturday - but Kilby boss Mick Kennedy insists his side didn’t turn in a bad performance, they just weren’t clinical enough when their chances came along.

Colts, managed by ex-Bilby defender David Proctor, took the lead twice at Broadwood through Zak McKay and Danny Hatfield, either side of David Ferguson’s 64th minute equaliser for East Kilbride.

And the hosts managed to survive a late barrage from Kilby, which saw them hist the woodwork twice, to claim all three points and consign EK to an early defeat in defence of their Lowland League title.

But it was far from a case of Kennedy reading the riot act after the match. He said: “We were a bit slow but we still dominated a lot of the game, hit the bar with a couple of chances. For the amount of possession we had we should really have created a lot more. We had 70 per cent possession but sometimes you can have so much of the ball it just makes things a bit slow.

“At 1-1, it looked like we would probably go on and win the game, but the last 5-10 minutes weren’t great.

“Keir Samson has hit the bar twice and he really should have scored twice, then Cami Elliott has put a header wide of the target from a good position. But, other than that, we haven’t really caused them many problems and their goalkeeper never had a save to make, so that tells its own story.

“It wasn’t bad performance overall or anything, it was just one of those days. We just need to be better and work on that this week.”

The display was in stark contrast to last week’s goals fest at K-Park, where Kilby thrashed Civil Service Strollers 7-1.
