East Kilbride boss: Risk to start new signings together paid off in win at Cumbernauld Colts

East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy says his risk to hand a first start to new signings Robert Thomson and John Robertson paid off after the duo combined to sink Cumbernauld Colts.

Thomson only came through the door this week but he was on hand to bag a goal and an assist on his debut, setting up Robertson - who made his debut from the bench last week against Caledonian Braves - for the opener at Broadwood in a 2-1 victory.

Colts made Kilby fight for their first win of 2024 after Billy Mortimer had cancelled out Robertson's strike just before half-time.

But it was Thomson who had the final say, nodding home from Nathan Flanagan's fantastic cross on the hour mark to get up and running in Kilby colours, following his move from League Two Stirling Albion.

Kennedy said: "That's why we've brought them in, to get that bit of quality at the top end of the pitch.

"The experience they have is a big thing as well and you could see the difference Thommo made today.

"He is just getting used to the system but I thought he was excellent, while Robbo has got genuine moments of quality in him.

"The decision all week was whether to start them or not. We were toing and froing.

"We had a really good training session with them on Thursday and they looked good, so we felt it was a risk worth taking.

"Sometimes these things pay off and today was one of those days.

"I felt we needed a bit of experience about the place and with them and Spenny [Lewis Spence] coming in over the last few weeks, they have added that extra bit of quality to the squad.

"Even though we've scored a lot of goals, they have been spread across the team. We've not had a focal point, but I think Thommo will be important to us for that and he will be an excellent signing."
