Douglas Luiz celebration backfires as Manchester United get last laugh after Aston Villa win

Douglas Luiz's celebration in front of Andre Onana and Raphael Varane backfired after Manchester United got the last laugh in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

United took an early lead through Rasmus Hojlund and were in front at the break. The hosts pushed on for an equaliser and eventually Luiz cancelled out Hojlund's early strike in the 67th minute.

Onana had initially saved Clement Lenglet's header at point-blank range, but after United fail to deal with a second ball which saw Luiz take advantage as he fired into the roof of the net from a low Leon Bailey cross. The Brazilian then appeared to pull out a bizarre celebration, shaking his chest in front of Varane and Onana.

The move, known as 'the shimmy', left United fans perplexed while Villa fans loved the celebration, but the Brazil international saw it backfire with United regaining the lead through Scott McTominay. His strike handed Erik ten Hag's side the winner, as they climbed up to sixth in the Premier League.

On the jubilant scenes in the away end post-match, United icon Gary Neville made references to comments from colleague Jamie Carragher after Arsenal's defeat of Liverpool a weekend ago.

"Yeah, they’re not over the top, are they?" he said. "Look, they’re enjoying it and there’s an edge to these types of games and that’s helped the team and supporters today.

"You felt there’d always be a winning goal coming and Hojlund is having a really good goalscoring season now and so is McTominay - that was a huge, huge goal for Manchester United.
