Erik ten Hag signing failed their Manchester United derby audition

Manchester United set up a date with Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after they struck late to defeat Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night. In what was an evenly-contested clash, United had spurned a number of good chances in the first half with two close-range Scott McTominay headers saved and an Antony shot hitting the crossbar.

Andre Onana pulled off several good saves as the home side threatened in spells. But it was United who nicked the vital goal in the dying moments of the game when Casemiro flicked on a low Bruno Fernandes free-kick to secure the victory for his side.

Ten Hag issued a staunch defence of Antony on the eve of the match, insisting the Brazilian could yet be 'unstoppable' in a United shirt if everything clicked. Talk is cheap though, and the real show of faith was that he started last night.

Antony's best performance in a United shirt came at the City Ground last season and the only thing stopping him early on was the crossbar after he cannoned an effort at goal early on.

Ten Hag's had clearly had an impact. Antony was a bright spark throughout the encounter, not only with his threat in the final third, but his overall link-up play and contribution to the performance.

A lot more will be required from him in the long run, but this was certainly an encouraging response after his embarrassing snub last weekend.
