‘Don’t blame Onana’ - Manchester United fans clear on who was at fault for Lens lobbed goal

Manchester United fans have clipped the ears of Diogo Dalot for his role in Lens’ half-pitch lob over Andre Onana on his Old Trafford debut.

Lens attacker Florian Sotoca took advantage of Onana’s aggressive positioning after receiving the ball following Dalot’s poor pass in midfield. From the centre-circle, the striker immediately chipped the ball over the United goalkeeper and into the net on 35 minutes.

Onana was brought in to utilise his ball skills and Erik ten Hag consequently asks him to play high up the field. It’s something that was seen on debut against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund during the tour of the US.

Onana was also lobbed against Madrid when Jude Bellingham scooped an effort into his net after Madrid broke United’s high defensive line. This time against Lens, the defence did not need to be broken.

The United shot-stopper had been cheered with every touch of the ball before the strike. The 27-year-old has been showing his ability with the ball at feet and was seen communicating to his defenders, most of which are likely to start against Wolves in the opening Premier League game.

However, Onana was left red-faced just over half an hour into his first home appearance but many fans directed the blame onto Dalot for his sloppy play. They argued that his loose ball meant Onana could do little about a strike that has to also be applauded for its accuracy.

Some United fans took to social media to react to the goal, deflecting blame away from new £47.7m arrival Onana.

The transfer window is in full swing and United have already got their hands on two players, with Mason Mount and Andre Onana through the door at Old Trafford and Rasmus Hojlund set to follow.
