'Envious' - Manchester United fans told to 'applaud' Glazers after transfer window

Danny Murphy insists Manchester United fans should 'applaud' the Glazers and said that other clubs would be 'envious' of their transfer spend.

United have spent around £180million on three new signings this summer, with Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund all arriving for significant fees.

There could yet be more new faces too, depending on outgoings, with United keen to sign a replacement for Harry Maguire, should he sign for West Ham.

However, the protracted sale of the club and rising level of debt means United fans are deeply unhappy with the American family's ownership. Murphy, though, feels they could have it much worse.

"I was actually surprised to see the business United had done because all the suggestions were the Glazers were going to sell the club, so a £200million investment into key areas of the team must be a huge bonus for the manager," he wrote in The Mail.

"I understand the animosity of supporters towards the owners and to be honest it look irreversible. But you can’t question the owners backing their manager and trying to make United competitive.

"Whether fans want to or not, they have to applaud that because ultimately what you want is to see the team progress. They have won a first trophy in six years and made Old Trafford a fortress again.

"Now they have filled the holes from last season. They needed a goalkeeper, midfielder and striker and they have got them.

"I can only comment on the relationship between the Glazers and the fans from afar but I would think a lot of supporters from other clubs would be quite envious of the assistance Ten Hag has got from his bosses in this window."
